A beautiful and iconographically rich 19th-century Greek Orthodox icon depicting "Saint George Slaying the Dragon", accompanied by the rescued youth of Mytilene, presented in an elegant velvet-lined gilt frame.
The icon illustrates the famous miraculous intervention of Saint George. Mounted on a dynamic white charger, the saint is depicted piercing the winged dragon with his spear. A fascinating and highly collectible aspect of this iconography is the small figure of a young boy perched on the horse behind Saint George, holding a cup. This refers to the miracle of the young Christian boy from Mytilene who was abducted into captivity and miraculously rescued by the saint while serving wine to his captors.
On the right, Princess Elisaba is seen looking out from a castle tower, watching the deliverance of her city. In the upper left corner, the hand of God emerges from a cloud to bless the victory. The vibrant sky-blue background is adorned with clear red Greek inscriptions identifying the saint. The stylistic execution displays refined characteristics influenced by late Western European artistic principles, typical of 19th-century Greek religious workshops.
The solid wooden icon is housed in an exceptional, luxury presentation setting featuring a deep blue velvet matting insert, which beautifully complements the icon's color palette. This is further enclosed in a substantial, antique gilt wooden frame, making the piece ready for prominent display.
