Chair (2) - Wood

Two chairs commonly known in Italy as “Sgabello” vestibule stools in a Neorenaissance Baroque style, with a tall, carved back featuring floral scrolls, and a central teardrop-shaped crest.

The front leg is shaped with a startingly carved “festoon” motif and large curled volutes, in keeping with the imposing style of the furniture. Solid beech wood stained walnut, the material of choice for high-definition carving of the era. The original patina is clearly visible, although the seat shows scratches, surface wear, and patination due to time and use (nothing a good wax and a fine steel wool polishing can’t refresh).

The rigid seat and narrow frame were designed to welcome visitors during short waits, either standing or seated. It was a type of chair well suited for the entrances of noble houses, where visitors waited. They were meant to be pressed against the walls, which is why the front part is richly carved while the back of the backrest is smooth.

Dating to the early 20th century (Historicism / Umbertine / Neo-Renaissance, circa 1880-1920). In that era there was a very large demand from the bourgeoisie for furnishings that recalled the splendors of the Renaissance. Still sought after for their refinement.

Measurements: 39x42 x 114 cm; seat height 50 cm; weight 5.5 kg each.
