The rediscovery of René Gabriel's archives (1899-1950) at the library of the École nationale supérieure des arts décoratifs has shed new light on the work of this designer, a prominent figure of social modernism and the years of reconstruction. René Gabriel achieved his early successes by drawing and producing, as a young student, his own wallpaper designs. A furniture designer, at 23 he received the Blumenthal scholarship and in 1925 he participated in the International Exhibition of Decorative and Industrial Arts, alongside Francis Jourdain and the modernists. An illustrator, he was also a theater designer and a scenographer, notably for his friends Léon Chancerel and Louis Jouvet. Receding from the major figures of the 1920s, René Gabriel stood out from his contemporaries by his rejection of luxury and ostentation. Continuing his work as an artist and designer, which led him to collaborate with prestigious houses – Nobilis, Leroy, Follot – he played a decisive role in reconstruction design: he notably drew hundreds of models for disaster victims and drew closer to Auguste Perret for the reconstruction of Le Havre.
