Description from the seller
Large porcelain fish pot in Famille Rose (Fencai) glaze
China, Late Qing Dynasty (19th century)
Diameter 29.5 cm × height 25 cm
This type of vessel, traditionally used in affluent homes to house goldfish (symbols of abundance and wealth), is distinguished here by the quality of enamel application in slight relief and by the finesse of the plumage and peony design.
Made in hard-paste porcelain with a lightly celadon-tinted glaze, in polychrome Famille Rose enamels. The body is richly animated with a traditional birds-and-flowers scene (Huniǎo) depicting a couple of pheasants/phoenix perched on scholar’s rocks (Taihu), surrounded by blooming peonies in shades of pink, blue and white. The reverse is embellished with butterflies and dragonflies in flight.
The upper neck features a geometric frieze with a green and pink lattice pattern, punctuated by stylized flowers. The flared lip is adorned with red-brown volutes. The lower portion is underscored by a band of multicolored gadroons.
Condition: Good overall. Colors exceptionally fresh and vivid. Minor original firing imperfections (pinholes) and internal patina with wear. Chips.
Provenance: Kanaka The Collection, Portugal
