Description from the seller

Beautiful hand-painted Hindeloopen tray – traditional Frisian folk art

A stunning hand-painted Hindeloopen tray with rich floral decoration, executed in the characteristic colors and style of the famous Frisian painting tradition. This decorative tray forms a wonderful example of Hindeloopen folk art, a art form dating back to the 17th and 18th centuries and closely connected to Friesland's rich maritime history.

The oval tray features a deep red background on which an elegant composition of flowers and leaves is symmetrically applied. The refined painting with warm tones of orange, yellow, green and black creates a lively contrast with the red substrate. The edge is finished in a dark tone and adorned with delicate gold ornaments, entirely in the traditional Hindeloopen style.

Hindeloopen developed from the 17th century into an important trading town with strong contacts with Scandinavia and Eastern Europe. The influences from these regions are clearly visible in the characteristic floral motifs, curls and decorative patterns that are typical of Hindeloopen painting. Furniture, trays and household objects were often richly painted and formed an important part of the interior.

This tray also features elegantly formed handles and a high rim, making it not only decorative but also functional. The underside bears a maker’s mark with initials, which may indicate an atelier or maker’s mark.

Due to its warm colors, rich decoration and traditional execution, this is a wonderful object for lovers of Frisian folk art, Hindeloopen painting and decorative antique trays.

Condition
In good vintage condition with light signs of use appropriate to age and use. The painting is still bright and decorative.
