Grebo masks were circulated very early in Paris. They in particular attracted the attention of Picasso, who possessed a collection of African masks and who drew inspiration from a Grebo mask.

Male masks with geometric shapes are often recognizable by their long nose framed by one, two, or several pairs of tubular-protruding eyes, sometimes of a threatening appearance. The features of female masks are softer, more harmonious, and more serene.
