A secretaire à abattant dating from the Dutch late Louis XVI / Directory period, circa 1795–1805.
Executed in the “Retour ‘d Egypt” style, whose inspiration and fashion followed Napoleon’s Expedition to Egypt from 1798 to 1801.

The secretaire is constructed from, among other woods, oak and mahogany, and veneered with mahogany veneer.
At the top there is a single drawer with an inlaid brass keyhole escutcheon and ring handles, decorated with lion heads.
Below there is a fall-front with an interior behind it consisting of an open compartment with flat columns and underneath six drawers veneered with mahogany veneer and brass knobs.
The writing surface is inlaid with high-quality dark green English cloth.
The keyhole escutcheon on the fall-front is decorated with, among other things, crossed arrow casings, a bow, laurel wreath, etc. The fall-front is flanked on both sides by plain tapered columns decorated with Caryatid heads and feet.
Behind the two doors there is a single shelf and they are provided with keyholes decorated with, among other things, ram heads, bows, garlands, twisted ribbon, etc.
Under the plain plinth, the secretaire rests at the front on square tapering legs. In addition to all the finely cast ornaments, the secretaire is richly decorated with brass profiled moldings.
All three locks have been replaced in the past and operate with their respective keys.
Spread across the secretaire, a number of old non-intrusive restorations have been carried out in the past.
The secretaire is topped with a Belgian hard stone top.

The entire secretaire is finished in its authentic wax finish, which over the centuries has gained a beautiful appearance and patina, giving the piece a deep warm color and a wonderful shine!
