Dutch Delft earthenware tile with a decorative scene of a gallant milieu by the water – Delft, 18th century

Description :
Monochrome blue on a white tin-glazed background. Square tile with a midnight-blue glaze, depicting a pastoral and gallant scene within a circular medallion, showing a man and a woman walking near a tree by a river, with ships and buildings in the background. The spoked-border corners are decorated with the traditional Dutch motif known as spinnekop (spider’s head).

Period: 18th century (circa 1750–1780)
Condition:
Good original condition. Small nibbles and glaze loss from use along the borders (visible at the corners). Traces of original mortar on the reverse. No restoration.
