Such striking metal cuffs traditionally come from various peoples of West and Central Africa. They were worn ritually or on festive occasions and historically often served as prestigious forms of currency as well. Characteristic of this type is the waisted, hourglass shape with a surrounding central ridge and the fine, geometrically engraved or chiselled tribal patterns on the surface.
