A Revolutionary Grand Prix Car

Developed for the new 2.5-litre Formula One regulations introduced in 1954, the Lancia D50 represented the company’s ambitious entry into Grand Prix racing. Rather than following established conventions, Lancia created an exceptionally compact and technically advanced single-seater.

Vittorio Jano Engineering

The D50 was designed under the direction of legendary Italian engineer Vittorio Jano. His unconventional approach focused on compact dimensions, balanced weight distribution, reduced aerodynamic drag, and the close integration of the engine, chassis, and transmission.

Naturally Aspirated V8

At its heart is a naturally aspirated 2.5-litre V8 engine producing approximately 260 PS in its early specification. The compact engine was mounted at an angle within the chassis, allowing the driveshaft to pass beside the driver and helping create a lower seating position.

Rear Transaxle Layout

Power is transmitted through a gearbox mounted at the rear of the car. This transaxle arrangement helped distribute the mechanical mass more evenly between the front and rear axles, contributing to the D50’s balanced handling characteristics.

Distinctive Side Fuel Tanks

The D50’s most recognisable features are its pannier-style fuel tanks positioned between the front and rear wheels. This arrangement reduced the variation in weight distribution as fuel was consumed while also cleaning the airflow between the exposed wheels.

Compact Construction

The engine was integrated into the structure of the car, contributing to chassis rigidity and allowing the D50 to be smaller and lighter than many contemporary Grand Prix machines. Its short wheelbase and concentrated mass gave it exceptional agility.

Immediate Competition Speed

The Lancia D50 made its Formula One World Championship debut at the 1954 Spanish Grand Prix. Alberto Ascari immediately demonstrated the car’s potential by securing pole position and setting the fastest lap, although mechanical problems prevented a debut victory.

From Lancia to Ferrari

Following Lancia’s withdrawal from motor racing in 1955, the D50 cars, components, and technical knowledge were transferred to Ferrari. Further-developed versions competed as Lancia-Ferrari D50s and helped Juan Manuel Fangio secure the 1956 Formula One World Championship.

Collector Appeal

Only a small number of original D50s were built, and the model occupies a unique place in the history of both Lancia and Ferrari. Its unusual engineering, distinctive appearance, and connection with drivers such as Alberto Ascari and Juan Manuel Fangio make it one of the most historically significant Formula One cars of the 1950s.
