Description from the seller
Wedding chest, Provençal, polychromed wood and wrought iron, 1930s - France
Wedding chest / Marriage chest or trousseau chest / Travel trunk
Style: Provençal
Materials: Polychromed wood and wrought iron
Period: 1930s
Country of origin: France
Good condition considering its age and use
Dimensions: 24.5 x 65 x 32 cm.
Beautiful wedding chest with vegetal decorations and a tender drawing of the couple riding a bicycle, dated to around the 1930s in France.
The trunk is articulated as a rectangular piece with a slightly arched lid, with parts secured by wrought iron hardware. On the top and the sides it features handles for transport, as well as a lock. On the front it displays a lovely drawing of a newlywed couple riding a bicycle, flanked by drawings of doves and flowers. This vegetal decoration repeats on the sides and the back, also on the lid we find this profusion of flowers and a large heart. Inside it is lined with blue cotton fabric with small specks.
This romantic theme is very much in keeping with the object's function, since the wedding chest is an object closely linked to the matrimonial rite. From the Middle Ages to the early 20th century, it was traditional for the groom to give his future wife a chest to store part of her dowry and later jewelry, pearls and valuable objects that he would have commissioned to decorate the front panel and the inside of the lid, since it was generally intended to adorn the bridal chamber. Opening the chest was a symbolic moment, full of emotional and social meaning for the couple.
It is a work of great refinement and historical value, a true jewel for any setting or art collection.
