[Unknown] - Qur'anic leaf - 1680

A miniature leaf from a dispersed bi-lingual C17th Qur’an, a format especially associated with Ilkhanid and early Timurid manuscripts, with interlinear translation in red. It contains the end of chapter 81, Al-Takwir (Putting out the Sun), v.19-29, followed by the heading of Surah 82, Al-Infitar (The "Sky' Splitting Open), v.1-19, although verse 19 continues overleaf to complete the totality of the Surah.

Chapter 81 (Surah At-Takwir), verses 19–29 are vital because they strongly defend the divine origin of the Quran and the character of Prophet Muhammad against the claims of disbelievers. The importance of Chapter 82 of the Quran is Surah Al-Infitar (The Splitting), lies in how it warns humanity about the Day of Judgment and human accountability.

The script is black naskh, separated by red interlinear translations and contains simple roundels in gold as verse markers. The whole is framed in a thick gold line.

The left marginal gold and polychromatic cursive marginalia finial names the two classical Shi'i sources, Ibn Babawayh's Hadith collection on the merits of deeds, and al-Tabrisi's famous Qur'an commentary. This is a classical fada'il al-Qur'an note, a marginal citation of the specific spiritual reward for reciting this Surah.
