WWII Egyptian Aluminium Trench Art Cigarette Case – Italian POW Type
An exceptionally detailed hand-worked aluminium cigarette case of the type traditionally attributed to Italian prisoners of war held in Egypt and North Africa during and around the Second World War.
Comparable POW-attributed examples are characterised by their aluminium construction, extensive hand engraving and punched decoration, together with Egyptian and North African motifs. This example displays many of those characteristic features.
The front is particularly impressive, with an elaborate applied and pierced architectural scene, depicting a mosque or Middle Eastern building flanked by two palm trees, set against a dark contrasting background. The individual elements are extensively hand tooled.
The reverse is equally interesting and is hand engraved with a distinctly Egyptian scene incorporating a sphinx, pyramids, palm tree, map-like outline of Africa and the word “EGYPT”.
The interior is exceptionally decorative. One side depicts an elegantly dressed couple together beneath a street lamp, surrounded by extensive geometric and foliate hand tooling. The opposite side carries a large and finely engraved rose and foliage, again surrounded by dense hand-worked decoration.
The amount of work carried out to both the exterior and interior makes this a particularly attractive example of this distinctive form of wartime souvenir / trench art.
