German Historicism – Openwork Silver Cake / Pastry Server – "Liebesvögel" (Lovebirds) & Rocaille – 800 Silver – Germany, c. 1900.
Offered is an intricately detailed antique German 800 silver pastry / cake server, dating from the German Historicism / Neo-Rococo period, approximately 1890–1910.
The server features a beautifully pierced blade (Durchbrochen) decorated with a central romantic motif of two lovebirds (Liebesvögel) perched amidst scrolling foliage, flowers, and lattice work.
The transition from blade to stem is accented by a detailed carved mascaron (grotesque face mask). The handle is decorated with ornate rocaille reliefs and culminates in a medallion cartouche terminal.
Hallmarks:
• Stamped on the reverse of the blade with 800 (indicating 800/1000 fineness silver).
• Bears the German Reichskrone (Crown) mark. The accompanying crescent moon mark was omitted, a phenomenon occasionally seen on German silver from this period, typically associated with export items or simplified factory stamping processes.
