Ivory Coast
Baoulé
Wood and textiles
Height: 515mm
Width: 120mm
Depth: 115mm
Weight: 1310g
Baoulé maternity statue, from the center of Ivory Coast. The style is homogeneous and corresponds to the classic Baoulé tradition, with a few features that may recall certain neighboring Yaouré productions. The attribution remains Baoulé.
1. Origin
• Ethnicity: Baoulé.
• Region: Center of Ivory Coast (Sakassou, Bouaké, Béoumi, Yamoussoukro).
• Height: 51.5 cm.
• Material: hard wood with a dark brown patina, acquired through handling.
The treatment of the face, the very elongated neck, scarifications and the hairstyle is characteristic of Baoulé aesthetics.
2. Usage
This sculpture was intended for religious and domestic use.
It could serve to:
• promote fertility;
• protect the mother and child;
• ensure the health of descendants;
• receive offerings during family ceremonies;
• symbolize the continuity of the lineage.
Baoulé maternity figures occupied an important place on family altars.
3. General description
The sculpture represents a standing woman carrying a child against her belly.
The overall impression is one of calm and balance, characteristic of Baoulé sculpture.
The proportions are deliberately idealized to emphasize feminine beauty rather than anatomical realism.
4. Stylistic analysis
The head
• elongated oval face;
• almond-shaped eyes slightly half-closed;
• straight nose;
• fine mouth;
• discreet scarifications around the face.
The hairstyle
The hairstyle is particularly neat:
• middle parting;
• very finely carved strands;
• low bun at the nape of the neck.
This type of hairstyle evokes ceremonial hairstyles of Baoulé women.
The neck
The long cylindrical neck is decorated with vertical rows of scarifications.
It symbolizes elegance and female prestige.
5. The maternity
The child is depicted:
• seated against the mother's belly;
• embraced by both arms;
• with a head proportionally large, according to African artistic conventions.
The mother protects the child while presenting it to the gaze, a symbol of the transmission of life.
6. The body
The sculpture features:
• a developed bosom;
• long, slender arms;
• powerful slightly bent legs;
• a sober but harmonious form.
Circular scarifications on the chest are a typical decorative element.
7. The base
The figure rests on a rounded rectangular base.
This base provides stability to the sculpture and shows signs of wear compatible with ancient use.
8. Condition
Noted:
• a vertical crack running through the face;
• another crack on the base;
• some wear on the corners;
• an old patina relatively homogeneous.
The cracks are consistent with natural aging of the wood.
9. Artistic quality
This maternity displays several qualities:
• balanced sculpture;
• beautiful handling of volumes;
• elegant face;
• finely carved hairstyle;
• convincing old patina;
• expressive representation of the mother-child relationship.
It stands above modern decorative production and appears to belong to a genuine tradition of ritual sculpture.
Summary
• Origin: Baoulé, center of Ivory Coast.
• Type: traditional maternity statue.
• Height: 51.5 cm.
• Use: protection of the mother and child, fertility, domestic cult and family rites.
• Characteristics: long engraved hairstyle, scarified neck, child held against the belly, beautiful dark brown patina.
• Condition: good overall with old wood shrinkage cracks and normal wear.
• Quality: traditional sculpture of good quality, representative of classic Baoulé art.
