Magnificent pair of menuki from the Edo period, depicting a mischievous monkey perched on the back of a water buffalo.

This traditional motif of Japanese animal art (Kachō-ga) blends humor, poetry and spirituality.

In Japanese iconography, the monkey (saru) has a deeply beneficial function: its name evokes the action of “driving away evil,” and it is considered a powerful protector against epidemics and misfortune.

Associated with the buffalo, an emblematic figure of patience, agricultural work and harmony with nature, this scene illustrates the alliance of quick wit and quiet strength.
