Description: A very beautiful model knottekistje (knotted box), executed in the form of a treasure chest. The piece is equipped with a handle and richly decorated depictions in cartouches of an elegant couple and other scenes. A knottekistje was a valuable gift from a man to the woman he wished to marry, mainly in the 17th and 18th centuries.
The term knottekist or knottedoos originates from an old Frisian custom around marriage proposals. A young man wrapped loose silver coins in a beautifully embroidered linen cloth. With this so-called knopendoek he walked past the girl who had stolen his heart. The clinking of the coins let the young lady know whether the suitor had sufficient means to take care of her. If she agreed, she pulled the knot tight. If she was not interested, the man could continue on his way without too much loss of face.
