French Art Nouveau Pyrographed Wall Shelf with Venetian Scene, circa 1910
A highly decorative French Art Nouveau wall shelf dating from around 1910, made in beechwood and decorated with an atmospheric Venetian canal scene.
The wood is engraved or pyrographed and selectively painted, creating fine dark outlines and warm areas of ochre, brown, black, red and a bit of enamel in blue. The technique gives the decoration an almost batik-like appearance. The central scene depicts steps descending towards the water, architectural details, foliage and boats, with reflections beautifully worked into the surface. The decoration continues around the curved sides of the shelf.
Its elongated, gently curved form is particularly elegant. A raised central shelf and the smaller compartments to either side provide enough space for small sculptures, ceramics or other decorative objects, allowing the piece to function as both wall decoration and a practical display shelf.
A fragment of the original French paper label remains on the reverse, supporting its French origin.
