Holophane Art Deco Ceiling Light – Prismatic glass – circa 1930

Rare ancient Holophane ceiling light in prismatic glass, circa 1930, in Art Deco / modernist style.

Elegant small luminaire with low footprint, composed of a molded prismatic glass dome Holophane, mounted on a remarkable circular metal mount with decorative work.

The glass features the characteristic network of fine prismatic ribs typical of Holophane productions, originally designed to refract, diffuse and distribute light evenly. The Holophane mark is visible on the glass (see dedicated photographs).

The mount, of fine workmanship, consists of a circular base with a finely worked decorative pattern and three decorative fixing screws, each about 2 cm in diameter, which hold the dome in place. The whole possesses an aesthetic very representative of industrial and modernist lighting fixtures of the interwar period.

Comparative research links this type of ceiling light to French Holophane productions of the 1920s-1930s: models from this period are documented in Holophane catalogs and in French Art Deco lighting furniture. The shape and dimensions of the dome are also consistent with several French examples preserved or offered on the specialized market.

Dating: circa 1930, attribution of the glassware to Holophane. The metal mount is presented as contemporary with the glass, with no confirmed manufacturer attribution.

Glass intact, with no crack, chip or visible missing parts. Mount in very good condition as well. A particularly clean piece for a luminaire of this period.

About Holophane

Holophane is one of the historic great names in prismatic lighting. The glass prism technology developed at the end of the 19th century enabled the manufacture of diffusers used notably in public buildings, industrial settings and modern architecture. French Holophane production developed notably at L’Andelys.

This type of glassware is today especially sought after for its optical qualities, its industrial aesthetic and its successful integration into Art Deco, modernist or contemporary interiors.
