Decorative Greek sterling silver lidded bowl, signed ZAPPA.
The bowl is richly decorated with applied leaves, berries and floral elements. A large sculptural flower forms the finial of the lid, while the rounded body rests on three ornamental feet. The combination of polished and textured silver gives the piece a very decorative appearance.
The silver is marked 925 and bears the maker’s registration mark 23.3. In the Greek system of silversmiths’ marks, the number 23 corresponds to the Ioannina region, traditionally one of the most important centres of Greek silversmithing. The piece is additionally signed ZAPPA.
I purchased the piece in Crete around 1998–1999 from a well-established jewellery gallery, and it has remained in my private collection since then.
Its form allows for various uses. It can be used as a sugar bowl or bonbon dish, as a small covered serving bowl or simply as a decorative silver object.
The piece has been practically unused and is in very good condition, with only very minor traces of age and storage. Some natural patina remains in the recessed areas of the decoration.
