Casket - Oak - oakwood chest

Remarkable oak chest in Gothic style, executed with a richly carved front featuring architectural tracings and floral motifs. The front is composed of a single protruding panel with pointed-arch decorations, characteristic of the late Gothic idiom.
Centerpiece is the heavy iron lock hardware. The chest rests on a wide, decoratively sawed plinth with five arched openings. The warm, relatively light oak wood has an attractive natural patina and visible signs of use and age.
The combination of the lavishly carved front, the Gothic tracings, the wrought-iron hardware and the sturdy oak construction gives the chest a strong decorative and authentic historicizing character.
According to tradition, the chest originates from a monastic environment in Deventer and was acquired at an estate sale toward the end of the last century. Origin possibly Dutch.
