Late Victorian folding lorgnette with a silver-plated metal handle, model Victorian - C.1900, dating circa 1880–1900 and made in the United Kingdom.
Description from the seller
A particularly attractive late Victorian folding lorgnette, dating to the late 19th century, circa 1880–1900.
The lorgnette features an elegant silver-plated handle of shaped outline, richly decorated on both sides with finely engraved floral and foliate ornament within geometric borders. The elaborate decoration extends along the handle, giving the piece the refined appearance characteristic of fashionable personal accessories of the Victorian period.
The folding spectacles are ingeniously concealed within the handle when closed and extend to reveal a pair of circular lenses held within slender metal frames. A suspension ring is fitted to the end of the handle, allowing the lorgnette to have been carried on a chain or ribbon.
A charming and highly decorative example of a late 19th-century optical and fashion accessory, combining practical function with the elaborate ornament associated with Victorian personal effects.
The lorgnette remains in good antique condition, with age-related wear and minor marks to the silver-plated surfaces. The lenses are in very good condition and remain clear. The folding mechanism is functional; however, it shows some age-related looseness and the spectacles may extend slightly when folded.
