Ferrari California 4.3 V8 – 2009

The Ferrari California was introduced in 2008 as a completely new chapter in Ferrari’s history. Although the name references the legendary 250 GT California from the fifties and sixties, the new model was technically a wholly new Gran Turismo. The California was developed as a Ferrari that combines the performance and experience of a sports car with considerably more comfort and everyday usability.

This example concerns a Ferrari California from 2009, originally delivered new by Monza Autobedrijf NV in Belgium. The car is finished in the particularly handsome Nero Daytona WB 508 and features a very extensive factory specification with €33,090 of additional factory options.

Among the most attractive options are the Daytona seats, the carbon-finished steering wheel with LED shift indicators, the Carbon Fibre Driver Zone, Scuderia Ferrari shields, red brake calipers and the desirable 20-inch Sport alloy wheels.

The car now has a Dutch license plate and a comprehensive documented service history. Notably, a major maintenance and repair service of €17,643.24 was performed by official Ferrari dealer Munsterhuis Sportscars, during which, in addition to regular maintenance, extensive work was carried out on the engine management and the electrically operated soft top mechanism.

BODYWORK/PAINT:

The Ferrari is finished in the elegant Nero Daytona WB 508, a metallic black color that harmonizes superbly with the California’s lines. Nero Daytona was ordered as a costly factory option and, according to the original specification, represented a price premium of €7,140.

The bodywork is in very neat condition. The paintwork presents itself well-kept and glossy, and the overall visual condition is in line with careful Ferrari maintenance.

The California was built around an aluminum chassis and also features a largely aluminum body. There are no known corrosion issues, welding work, or necessary body repairs.

One of the most important technical and visual features of the California is the fully electric, manually operable aluminum foldable hardtop. With the roof closed, the car has the look and comfort of a coupe; with the roof open, it quickly becomes a full open Ferrari.

Extensive maintenance has been performed on the roof mechanism at the official Ferrari dealer. This included replacement of the hydraulic roof latching and guidance, the main locking system, and the right roof cylinder/piston kit. The system was then recalibrated and reprogrammed.

The rubbers, windows, lighting and other visible body details are in well-kept condition. The Bi-Xenon headlights were also removed/replaced during the major dealer service and the system was recalibrated again.

The car sits on the pricey optional 20-inch Sport alloy wheels, a clear upgrade over the standard 19-inch wheels. The combination with the red Ferrari brake calipers and the Scuderia shields on the fenders gives the car a sporty yet original factory look.

TECHNICAL:

Behind the front axle sits Ferrari’s atmospheric 4,297 cc V8, producing 460 hp and 485 Nm of torque. It is the matching-numbers engine.

The engine features direct fuel injection and a flat-plane crankshaft and is paired with Ferrari’s 7-speed F1 transmission with dual-clutch. Via the paddle shifters behind the steering wheel, the driver can manually shift gears.

The transmission is mounted at the rear in a transaxle configuration and drives the rear wheels. The California also features electronic E-Diff differential, F1-Trac traction control and Ferrari’s CST stability control.

The car is in technically good condition and ready for use. The engine and transmission function as intended. No known technical work is required before the car can be used.

An important part of the history is the extensive invoice of €17,643.24 from official Ferrari dealer Munsterhuis Sportscars dated August 2023. Much more was carried out than regular maintenance.

The engine had a misfire investigated. The fuel pressure regulator was replaced, a fuel line renewed, the intake manifold gasket replaced, and all eight spark plugs were renewed.

In addition, the foldable roof was thoroughly inspected and repaired. The hydraulic roof locking and guidance were replaced, as well as the main locking system and the right roof cylinder/piston kit. The roof was subsequently re-calibrated and reprogrammed.

Lighting was addressed as well: the headlights were removed and replaced, and the lighting system was recalibrated.

During the same works, a full annual Ferrari service was performed, including engine oil service, oil filter, seals, injector cleaner and refresh/verification of fluids.

In July 2024, the car was re-listed with the same official Ferrari dealer after entering limp mode. Using Ferrari diagnostic equipment, the fault was read and traced to the accelerator pedal sensor. The wiring and connections were checked, electrical contacts cleaned and after a test drive the car operated normally again. The invoice for these works was €475.70.

The California is factory equipped with high-quality carbon-ceramic Brembo brakes (CCM), as well as double-wishbone front suspension and a multi-link rear axle.

INTERIOR:

The interior of this California forms a striking contrast to the black Nero Daytona exterior and is richly equipped with leather.

One of the most important factory options are the coveted Daytona Seats, identifiable by the classic horizontal pattern that references historic Ferrari models. These were combined with the luxurious Full Electric Seats Package, which extended the standard electric seat adjustment with additional adjustment options and memory functions.

The headrests feature the embroidered Cavallino Rampante, while contrasting stitching further accentuates the interior.

Another important part of the configuration is the Carbon Fibre Steering Wheel with integrated LED shift indicators. The LEDs at the top of the wheel provide the optimal shift point during spirited driving. In addition, the car is equipped with the Carbon Fibre Driver Zone, with various parts around the driver finished in carbon.

Behind the steering wheel is the prominent red tachometer, also a separately ordered factory option.

The interior further features automatic dual-zone climate control, cruise control, electrically adjustable steering column, power windows, central locking and Ferrari’s infotainment system with touchscreen, satellite navigation, Bluetooth, USB, iPod connectivity, voice control and hard drive storage.

The leather, dashboard, door panels, center console and other interior parts are in well-kept condition. The electrical functions operate as intended.

This Ferrari California concerns an original European specification and was delivered new on 29 May 2009 by Monza Autobedrijf NV in Belgium.

The car has subsequently received maintenance from various Ferrari dealers and specialists in Belgium and the Netherlands, including Monza Autobedrijf, Modena Motors Sud, Prins Exclusivo, Kroymans Automotive, Mugello Engineering and official Ferrari dealer Munsterhuis Sportscars.

The drivetrain consists of the atmospheric 4.3-liter V8 with direct fuel injection, flat-plane crankshaft and 460 hp, combined with the 7-speed F1 dual-clutch transmission, steering wheel shift paddles, rear-wheel drive and transaxle layout.
