Description from the seller
A superb sectioned Nautilus shell pair of exceptional quality, carefully cut into two matching halves to reveal the extraordinary internal architecture of the shell.
This is a particularly fine specimen, with remarkably well-defined and complete chambers throughout. The delicate septa remain beautifully intact, creating the characteristic sequence of progressively smaller chambers that follows the Nautilus’ elegant logarithmic spiral. The precision and preservation of the internal structure make this pair especially attractive from both a natural history and decorative perspective.
The exposed interior displays warm shades of pearl, cream, champagne and golden amber, enhanced by subtle iridescent reflections from the natural mother-of-pearl. Depending on the light, delicate tones of green, pink and silver also emerge across the nacreous surfaces.
The reverse retains the shell’s striking natural exterior pattern, with contrasting reddish-brown bands over a pale cream background, providing a beautiful visual counterpoint to the refined internal structure.
The quality of the sectioning allows the geometry of the Nautilus to be appreciated in exceptional detail, from the large outer chambers to the tightly coiled central spiral. The chambers are exceptionally clean, sharply defined and well preserved, making this a top-quality example.
Dimensions of the two halves:
15.4 × 11.7 × 5 cm
15 × 11.5 × 3.7 cm
Presented on clear acrylic display stands, the two halves form an elegant and highly decorative natural history display, ideal for a collection, cabinet of curiosities or sophisticated interior.
Attention bidders from outside EU: This lot requires specific cites custom clearance procedures to be shipped outside Italy and then imported in your Country. We strongly discourage bidders from outside the European Union to make offers.
