Wall mirror - Papier-mache - Qajar Persian Mirrorbox

An impressive and unusually large 19th-century Persian Qajar dynasty lacquered mirror case (Ayeneh-Dandani). Monumental size (60 x 27.5 cm), significantly larger than standard market pieces.
Crafted with a traditional thick gesso ground layer and finished using the organic Roghani varnish technique, which has developed a rich, authentic antique craquelé patina over the last 150 years.

Design & Iconography:

Top:
Architectural Mihrab (prayer niche) shape surmounted by a Sar-lowh (finial) decorated with a folk-art Gol-o-Morgh (flower and bird) motif.

Exterior:
Upper panel depicts two figures flanking a stylized cypress tree (Sarv, symbol of eternity).
The doors feature naive provincial folk-art scenes of two figures in a paradise garden.

Interior:
Original antique mercury mirror glass with authentic silvering oxidation.

The stunning cobalt blue inner border features a classic hunting scene (Shikargah) with visible gold-painted (Zarkari) silhouettes of gazelles, birds, and stylized Persian calligraphic inscriptions.

Condition:
Fair antique condition. Structurally solid, and sturdy.

The doors move smoothly on their original hinges; when closed completely, the left door has a tight fit with slight friction. Shows honest age-related wear and lacquer/gesso losses along the high-relief borders.

Restoration Potential:

High-potential "sleeper" project. The outer lacquer layers have heavily darkened over time.
Under strong light, vibrant hidden red pigments and gold iconography are clearly visible beneath the darkened varnish on the inside of the left door. The inside of the right door has historic over-lacquering, likely preserving original decoration underneath.
A careful, professional cleaning will beautifully revive these hidden polychrome scenes.
