Orla Jeppesen (OJ) – Danish Mid-Century Studio Pottery – Bowl model 162 with bird motif – circa 1960s

A distinctive and characterful piece of Danish studio pottery by ceramicist Orla Jeppesen, executed as model 162 and probably produced in the 1960s.

Orla Jeppesen belongs to the interesting group of Danish potters from the postwar period. Before he established himself as an independent ceramicist in Herstedvester in 1948, he worked for about twelve years at the famous pottery workshop Kähler in Næstved. This background is clearly reflected in his sense of form, glaze and decoration.

This square bowl has a pronounced Scandinavian Mid-Century Modern character. The central decoration consists of a strongly stylized bird, rendered in contrasting black-and-white tones. The graphic design beautifully contrasts with the dark, matte gray-black exterior of the bowl.

The bird motif gives the object almost the character of a small ceramic artwork. It is therefore not only functional as a bowl, but especially attractive as a decorative collectible.

On the underside, the bowl is hand-marked with the characteristic scratched “OJ” signature of Orla Jeppesen and the number 162, indicating the model/form number.

There are several works by Jeppesen known where his OJ signature is combined with a model number. Other bowls with stylized bird and rooster decorations are also known, making this piece a nice fit with his characteristic decorative ceramics.
