Icon - Nicholas the Wonderworker - Wood

Russian Orthodox icon depicting Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker (St. Nicholas of Myra), painted on a wooden panel, late 19th to early 20th century. The saint is shown half-length in episcopal vestments, blessing with his right hand and holding an open Gospel in his left. Christ and the Mother of God appear in small celestial medallions to either side, a traditional element of the iconography of St. Nicholas. The richly worked gold-toned ground is surrounded by a polychrome ornamental border in red, green and blue. Cyrillic inscriptions remain visible. Extensive age-related craquelure, surface wear, losses and patination throughout, consistent with its devotional use and age. Unframed.
