Description from the seller

A very beautiful French bronze artistic plaque entitled “Victory,” created in 1908 by the famous medalist Lucien Jean-Henri Cariat (1874-1925) for the Monnaie de Paris.

The obverse depicts a triumphant winged Victory with open arms, holding a laurel branch, the universal symbol of victory and reward. The relief is particularly fine and testifies to the quality of the engraving characteristic of the Art Nouveau period.

The reverse features a bugle of Fame resting on a palm and laurel branches. The cartouche intended for any eventual engraving remained blank, which is a real asset for collectors.

The work is signed L. CARIAT on both faces and bears the BRONZE punch of the Monnaie de Paris on the edge.

The piece is kept in its original case, an element that has become rather uncommon.

Lucien Cariat is a well-known French medalist whose several works are today held in the collections of the Musée d’Orsay and appear in the reference catalogs of French medallic art.
