The piece is made of solid heavy ferrous metal (a magnet sticks firmly to its surface) and is adorned with substantial and widespread traces of its original gold leaf gilding, visible especially in the recesses. The presence of gilding on a ferrous alloy from this period testifies to the importance and the original wealth of the artifact.
