Thangka Mandala Kalachakra, a handmade textile Thangka from the Fine XX century, depicting a multi‑coloured Kalachakra mandala with intricate iconography, measuring 38 cm by 33 cm.
Description from the seller
Thangka Mandala Kalachakra - 33x38 cm
Description:
In the auction, a fascinating hand-painted Thangka. The work depicts a detailed and complex Mandala, identifiable as the Kalachakra Mandala (Wheel of Time), surrounded by a rich pantheon of deities, masters, and narrative scenes.
Iconographic Details:
The Thangka is centered on a multicolored circular Mandala, a geometric and symbolic representation of the Kalachakra deity’s palace. Around the central Mandala, on a dark background that fades into stylized landscapes, numerous figures are painted:
* Upper Register: Deities and lineage masters seated on colored clouds.
* Sides: Various forms of Buddha, Bodhisattva, and wrathful protectors (such as Mahakala or Yamantaka, visible in close-up details), set in a landscape rich with natural elements (trees, rocks, rivers) and offering scenes.
* Lower Register: Additional sacred figures, practitioners, and mythological creatures.
* Border: The painted area is framed by a decorative band with floral motifs, dragons, and auspicious symbols (endless knots, lotus thrones).
The workmanship is of good quality, with vibrant use of traditional colors (gold, red, blue, green) and notable precision in even the smallest details, as highlighted by macro photos.
Materials and Technique:
Egg tempera painting (mineral and organic pigments mixed with animal binder) on cotton canvas, prepared with lime plaster and glue. Some details are finished in gold.
Dimensions:
* Height: 38 cm
* Width: 33 cm
Condition:
The work is in generally good condition for its age, as shown in the photographs which are an integral part of the description. There are slight signs of wear consistent with devotional use and time: light pigment loss in some areas, natural creases of the canvas, and a general shading on the back. The back of the canvas shows a natural patina and some handwritten annotations (visible in photos 8 and 9: "No. 63"). It is unframed.
