The Falkenstein Castle was built in the 13th century and played a significant role as a strategic defensive facility in Carinthia. According to tradition, it already served Emperor Barbarossa as lodging during a crusade. Later the castle fell to the Habsburgs and over the centuries lost military importance. In 1905 it was comprehensively restored and today ranks among the oldest, still preserved castles in Carinthia with high cultural-historical value.
