Sony MDS-JA555ES 100V MD recorder, flagship model from 1999, in excellent physical condition and tested fully functional with remote control and power cord included, weighing 15.3 kg.

This is Sony's top-of-the-line MD recorder, the MDS-JA555ES.
I have confirmed that the tape playback, fast forward, rewind, and audio output are all functioning.
Audio output has been confirmed from OPT1, OPT2, COAX, and ANALOG inputs.
Recording has also been confirmed.
The tape holder opens and closes smoothly.
The display is clean and clear.
The panel buttons are responsive.
The remote control is responsive.
As a used item, there are some minor scratches and dirt on the exterior, but I believe it is in a visually clean condition.
An MD deck that serves as the prestige model of the ES series, featuring a newly developed ATRAC TYPE-R DSP and a new DAC system.
It employs a newly developed ATRAC TYPE-R DSP that doubles the signal processing capability of the conventional ATRAC DSP. In addition, by adopting a newly developed intelligent bit reallocation algorithm, it makes the most of this increased processing power, reanalyzing spectrally converted data to search for minute levels of redundant bit allocation that were previously difficult to detect, and redistributing them to frequency bands that are important for auditory perception. This enables even finer and more refined bit allocation, making it possible to bring the sound closer to the waveform of the original music source.
Discs recorded with this ATRAC TYPE-R DSP can also be played back on MD decks that do not feature a TYPE-R DSP.
It introduces wide bitstream technology enabled by the adoption of the ATRAC TYPE-R DSP.
By converting input and output to 24-bit and expanding the arithmetic word length, it enables recording and playback with a wide dynamic range equivalent to 20-bit precision, exceeding the 16-bit limit of the MD format.
The DAC section employs a new DAC system that uses the S-TACT IC.
S-TACT reads the input digital data and generates highly accurate pulse signals. Furthermore, by completely separating the pulse generation section from the digital arithmetic sections such as the digital filter and noise shaper, it offers the benefit of eliminating the influence of digital noise on the time-axis direction of the pulses.
In the MDS-JA555ES, a newly developed S-TACT IC with improved clock precision of 128Fs is employed, allowing the capabilities of the 24-bit (V.C.) digital filter used in the preceding digital arithmetic section to be fully realized, thereby expanding the dynamic range and improving the S/N ratio.
The D/A conversion section of the DAC system employs the current pulse D/A converter used in Sony's Super Audio CD players and ES series CD players. The pulses output as voltage are converted into current, which is less susceptible to voltage-based noise, for transmission. By having a stable current source and being unaffected by voltage fluctuations, it enables excellent low-frequency reproduction.
It is equipped with a sampling rate converter that automatically converts sampling frequencies of 32kHz and 48kHz to 44.1kHz.
The power supply section employs an R-core transformer, which uses a transformer core with no gaps and a circular cross-section in a toroidal shape, significantly reducing magnetic flux leakage and vibration.
Furthermore, the MDS-JA555ES is equipped with one R-core transformer each for the audio system and the digital signal system, realizing a power supply with minimal interference and fluctuation.
The chassis structure employs an FB chassis, which uses metal materials with sufficient strength and reinforces the entire chassis as a single box with a frame surrounding the outer perimeter and beams running front to back. By combining components of different shapes and sizes, it mutually cancels out natural vibrations, greatly reducing vibration of the chassis as a whole.
In addition, diagonal beams are added to the front and sides of the frame to further reinforce the chassis, and vibration-resistant reinforcement materials are used, such as employing two 2mm-thick bottom plates, greatly reducing vibration of the chassis as a whole.
For disc loading, it adopts a low-center-of-gravity center and ray loading mechanism.
The tray loading section and base unit section are floated on insulators and compression coil springs, and the mold that holds the base unit section uses PBT, a material with excellent vibration damping characteristics, thereby reducing vibration to the disc and improving signal reading accuracy.
It employs eccentric insulators that offset the mounting hole positions on the chassis from the center. This causes vibrations transmitted from the outside to mutually cancel each other out, making them less likely to reach the chassis, and is particularly effective in attenuating vibration components in the mid-to-high frequency range that affect auditory perception.
It is equipped with a digital REC level control, allowing gain adjustment from -∞dB to a maximum of +18dB, centered at 0dB.
It also features a memory function that can store the set recording level for each input system.
It is equipped with a variable (V.C. = Variable Coefficient) digital filter that can produce subtle changes in sound by altering the cutoff characteristics of the digital filter during MD playback. In the MDS-JA555ES, the arithmetic word length has been increased to 24 bits while the arithmetic speed has also been increased, and combined with the adoption of the 128Fs-compatible S-TACT IC, processing capability has been dramatically improved.
