Scheepjesschelling – West-Friesland, Enkhuizen, 1678

Northern Netherlands – Republic of the United Netherlands, West-Friesland. Struck at Enkhuizen under moneyer David Hagenet.

Very sharp specimen, with excellently preserved details on both obverse and reverse.

Extra special is the open figure 8 in the year, a sought-after mint variant clearly visible and giving this issue added appeal for the specialized collector.

The Scheepjesschelling was struck in the chartered Mint of Enkhuizen, operated by the Amsterdam jeweler Dirck Bosch. The coin dies were produced by the leading die engraver Christoffel Adolphi, whose work is known for its high quality and refined execution.

Obverse:
Sailing warship under full sail with the Dutch tricolor on the stern. Inscription: DEVS FORTITVD0 ET SPES NOSTRA (God is our strength and hope).

Reverse:
Crowned coat of arms of West-Friesland, flanked by the denomination 6 – S, with the inscription MO:NO:ORDIN:WEST:FRISIÆ 1678.

West-Friesland formed administratively part of the county of Holland, but throughout the Republic maintained its own provincial minting. The towns Hoorn, Enkhuizen and Medemblik supplied the minting in turn from 1587, a system that remained in place until 1796.
