The phenomenon of year-date changes on the ½ guilders from the period 1853–1866 is well known. Usually, the original figures when adjusting the coin die are so carefully concealed that the exact underlying year can no longer be determined with certainty.

This specimen is a notable exception to that. Under the 9 of 1859 the characteristic line of the original 7 is clearly visible, making the die modification 1859/57 readily recognizable.

A very rare and particularly interesting die variant, moreover offered in very high quality. An attractive specimen with sharp details and strong presence.
