The Minolta Hi-Matic AF of 1979 brought autofocus to the long-running Hi-Matic line, using the Visitronic contrast-comparing system that had just made focus automation practical in compact cameras. Its sharp Minolta Rokkor 38mm f/2.8 lens, programmed auto exposure and built-in flash made point-and-shoot photography genuinely effortless years before the concept became universal, and the solid black body still feels more substantial than the plastic compacts that followed. As one of the first-generation autofocus 35mm cameras it holds a real place in camera history while remaining an easy, dependable shooter today.
