African statuette originating from DR Congo, of the Kongo ethnic group, Nkishi served as mediators between the dead and the living.
Because dogs dig and have keen sensory perceptions, they were also considered particularly adept at drawing attention to the impenetrable underworld. The Nkishi koso fetish dog presents itself with aggressive, sharp teeth. Glass eyes reference the land of the dead and have a mediation and clairvoyance function.
The dog assists the nganga (ritual specialist) in the search for maifaiteurs and in the tracking of malicious witches.
