Oil on canvas by German painter Werner Petri, a late impressionist realism in the Düsseldorfer Schule tradition from the late 1960s to 1970s, framed with overall 61×51 cm (canvas 50×40 cm) and signed lower right, in good condition with minor signs of age.
Description from the seller
For sale is a masterful, classical still life of flowers by the listed German painter Werner Petri (born January 30, 1921). The work shows a lush, colorful bouquet in harmonious pastel and natural tones. It is distinguished by its vibrant presence and the masterful, academic brushwork Petri perfected during his studies at the art academies in Düsseldorf (under Prof. Junghans) and Königsberg (under Prof. Engel).
Era/Year: Created in the late 1960s to 1970s. The work is a representative example of upscale German salon painting of the post-war modern era.
Style: Late impressionist realism in the tradition of the Düsseldorf School of Painting. The motif combines the natural fidelity of Baroque precedents with the lightness and vigor of Impressionism.
Technique: Real oil painting on canvas (hand-painted). The oil paint was applied in the characteristic impasto technique, in places very thickly, giving the blooms a tangible, sculptural relief texture and a fantastic depth of light.
Signature: Hand-signed by the artist on the lower right.
Certificate/Origin: On the back lies the original artist’s label with the painter’s biography and his international exhibitions (including London, New York, Beirut). Additionally, the original stretcher size “40x50” is handwritten on the wood.
Framing: The painting is housed in a contemporary, substantial display frame in gold-tone with a dark inner trim. The canvas is classic with corner keys and securely mounted in the decorative frame.
Dimensions without frame (canvas): 50 cm x 40 cm
Dimensions with frame: 61 cm x 51 cm.
Painting: The oil painting itself is in excellent, clean condition. The colors are vivid and fresh, the canvas is well stretched. No cracks or color losses on the painting surface.
Frame: The frame is sturdy and decorative. It shows age-related wear. In the upper right corner and along the inner edge there are visible flakings of the plaster/gilding layer (see detail photos). The white backing material is visible there.
