Description

Large and decorative Dutch Delft Blue wall plate with a diameter of no less than 39 cm, made of glazed earthenware.

The plate is hand-painted with an atmospheric maritime scene. Depicted is a lively sea with several traditional sailing ships, small vessels and gulls under an expressive cloudscape.

The painter has used several shades of cobalt blue and built up the scene with clearly visible brushstrokes. Especially in the waves and clouds, the free, painterly style of decoration is clearly visible. As a result, every hand-painted piece has its own character.

On the back there is a hand-painted blue maker’s mark, consisting of stylized vessel/bottle shapes, with the inscription:

“Delfts Holland”

The exact pottery workshop or manufacturer has not been established with certainty. The plate is therefore offered as Dutch earthenware in Delftware style and not attributed to Royal Delft/De Porceleyne Fles.

Based on execution, shape, decoration and backmark, the plate is likely dated to the mid-20th century, circa 1930–1960.

The back shows clear crazing in the glaze, in keeping with the age and character of the earthenware. The plate is fitted with a metal hanging device and can be used directly as wall decor.

With its generous size of 39 cm and the fully painted seascape, it is a striking decorative object for an interior or a collection of Dutch earthenware, Delft Blue, or maritime art.
