Description from the seller
Antique Silver-Coloured Goblet / Chalice – Richly Hand-Engraved – Dated 1892
Elegant antique goblet on a tall stem, dating from the late 19th century.
The cup is particularly richly decorated with finely executed floral engraving. Almost the entire upper section is covered with flowers, leaves and ornamental motifs against a finely textured background. The combination with the more restrained bowl-shaped lower section and slender stem gives the piece a very elegant appearance.
At the centre is a smooth cartouche bearing the historical inscription:
“W.H.J.
TCHANG.
10th March 1892”
This allows the piece to be precisely dated to 10 March 1892. It was most likely made as a personal presentation or commemorative goblet.
Several old marks are present on the inside of the foot, including a rectangular “20” mark, a second rectangular punch and a lozenge-shaped maker’s mark. The exact maker and meaning of these historical marks have not been conclusively identified and are therefore not attributed further.
The goblet weighs approximately 200 grams and measures approximately 15.5 cm in height.
The object has been carefully polished, allowing the finely detailed engraving to stand out beautifully once again. It shows normal signs of use and age consistent with an object more than 130 years old. There is also a small dent, visible in the photographs. Please study the detailed images carefully for the overall condition.
A decorative and characterful late-19th-century piece, appealing both as a collector’s item and as a unique historical object thanks to its dated inscription.
