Description from the seller
Elegant vintage giltwood picture frame, most likely of French manufacture and dating from the mid-20th century, circa 1940s-1960s.
The substantial rectangular frame is designed in a refined Neoclassical style, inspired by the Directoire and Empire periods. Its deep moulded profile is decorated with a finely carved rhythmic fluted pattern, enriched at the corners with stylised anthemion and foliate motifs. Multiple stepped gilt borders surround an inset linen-covered liner, creating an elegant transition toward the artwork.
The warm, softly aged gilding retains an attractive patina, with subtle reddish undertones visible in areas where the surface has naturally worn over time. Its generous architectural proportions make it particularly suitable for an oil painting, portrait, still life or decorative panel.
The frame remains in perfect vintage condition, with normal traces of age and use, including rubbing, small losses and scratches to the gilded finish, minor separation and wear at some joints, and light ageing to the linen-covered inner border. Sold as an empty frame, without glass, backing or artwork.
