Five blue-on-white Delft faience tiles (12.7 × 12.7 cm, 0.7 cm thick) from the Netherlands dating to the 18th century, depicting ships and marine monsters with two tiles showing sailing ships and three showing fish and fantastical sea creatures, generally in good condition for the period aside from a substantial edge chip on the fish tile and minor glaze loss on others, with mortar traces on the reverse.

Set of 5 Delftware earthenware tiles with blue decoration – Ships and sea monsters (18th century)
Description :
Rare lot of 5 antique Delft glazed earthenware tiles with cobalt blue painting on a subtly tinted white background. The set consists of two tiles depicting sailing ships and three tiles adorned with fish and fantastical sea creatures leaping out of the water. Corners decorated with the traditional Dutch oxhead motif (ossekop). Beautiful examples of 18th-century Dutch maritime imagery.

Format : 12.7 x 12.7 cm per tile
Thickness : 0.7 cm
Condition :
Tile fish 1 (top) : Significant edge chipping on the right edge and small marginal flaking.
Other tiles : Generally good condition for their age, light edge wear around the perimeter and small enamel losses at the corners without major alteration to the main motif.
Traces of ancient mortar on the reverse.
