The Contax N1 was the main high-end 35mm autofocus SLR of the new Contax N system.

Unlike earlier Contax SLRs based on the Yashica/Contax mount and manual-focus Carl Zeiss lenses, the N1 introduced the new N mount for autofocus Carl Zeiss lenses.

It represents an important transition in Contax history from its traditional manual-focus SLR system to its final generation of advanced autofocus film cameras.
