“The way men are seen in photography, in fashion, and how they view pictures of themselves has changed in recent years. The masculine image, the personal style of a man, the changing attitude toward the male face and body – these themes are now in focus.” — Mario Testino In SIR, star photographer Mario Testino presents over 300 photographs from his immense archive, illustrating men and the staging of masculinity in all their contemporary facets – dandies and gentlemen, machos and androgynous youths, VIPs and nameless beaux, images between assured nonchalance and narcissistic self-staging.
Among the portraits are Brad Pitt, George Clooney, Jude Law, Colin Firth, David Beckham, David Bowie, Mick Jagger and Keith Richards in a close embrace and double-breasted fold, or Josh Hartnett, who in his VMAN 2005 photo spread appears like a revenant of Helmut Berger in Visconti’s The Damned, underscoring how natural today the play with gender identities has become.
With an essay by Pierre Borhan, an interview with Patrick Kinmonth, and numerous previously unpublished images from Testino’s extensive archive, this book traces the evolution of male identity over the last three decades.
