The exhibition catalog of Fondation Beyeler is signed on the title page by Rudolf Stingel and bears a dedication “FOR ANETTE WERENFELS”. – It is probably referring to the Swiss documentary film producer Annette Werenfels.

At the corners/edges the delicate cover shows some rubbing/scuffing; there is also a minor stain. On the rear inner hinge there is a small tear (see photos).

What can painting be today? - Starting from his engagement with classical subject matter, Rudolf Stingel develops a wealth of motif variations. In addition to various series of abstract and photorealist paintings, large-format works made of Styrofoam, metal-cast images, and rooms lined with carpets or insulating boards are created, which may be touched and entered. In Europe’s first museum exhibition, Fondation Beyeler presents Stingel’s most important body of work from all periods.
The catalog published for the exhibition is conceived as an artist’s book and unfolds the visual variety and diversity of Stingel’s art. Image reproductions and exhibition views, shown in juxtaposition, reveal ever-new associative possibilities and thus allow for a completely new view of the oeuvre.

The painter RUDOLF STINGEL was born in 1956 in Merano and has lived in New York since the late 1980s. He engages with the possibilities and limits of painting.
