Description from the seller

Antique Russian icon depicting The Entry of Christ into Jerusalem.

The icon is painted in oil on an oval wooden panel and measures approximately 54 cm wide, 33 cm high and 3 cm thick.

An old Soviet certificate dated 23 June 1988 is attached to the reverse. According to the certificate, the object is a Russian icon, No. 1327, “Entry into Jerusalem”, dating from the 1870s, 19th century. The certificate also states that the icon is painted in oil and that its authenticity and dating were confirmed.

The scene depicts Christ entering Jerusalem on a donkey, surrounded by his disciples and people laying garments before him.

Condition

The icon is in good antique condition with age-related wear.

There is some craquelure, minor paint loss and wear around the edges, consistent with an object of this age. The composition remains clear and well preserved. The wooden panel shows natural signs of age but appears stable.

In our opinion, the overall condition and appearance are somewhat better in reality than some of the photographs may suggest.

Provenance / Documentation

A certificate from the Ministry of Culture of the USSR, dated 23 June 1988, is attached to the reverse and bears stamps and signatures.

The certificate identifies the object as:

“Russian icon No. 1327 – Entry into Jerusalem – 1870s, 19th century.”

It further states that the icon is painted in oil and that its authenticity and dating were confirmed.
