Special antique mechanical letter scale, manufactured by Ed. Widmann (E.W.) from Paris, France, active in the early decades of the 20th century.

This elegant desk scale was used for weighing letters and other small mail items to determine the correct postage rate.
The instrument features a finely open-worked metal mechanism, a clearly readable curved scale, and a round metal weighing platform.

The mechanism is mounted on a beautifully turned and polished wooden base. On the side there is the characteristic adjustable set screw with which the scale can be positioned precisely horizontal.

On the front of the mechanism is the E.W. mark visible. This stands for the French manufacturer Ed. Widmann from Paris.

The scale runs up to about 350 grams, a range characteristic of certain French E.W. letter scales from this period.

Condition:

Beautiful authentic antique condition with normal signs of aging and use. The metal parts show localized patina, discoloration, and light oxidation. The scale divisions are still clearly legible. The wooden base has an attractive warm patina and shows signs of use appropriate to its age.
