Opera glass from the Emil Busch company, Rathenow! Circa 1875.
Biedermeier Historicism.
Emil Busch (born August 6, 1820 in Berlin; died April 1, 1888 in Rathenow) was a German industrialist in the field of fine mechanics and optics. He was involved in the invention of the wide-angle lens.
In 1868 Busch was appointed Royal Commercial Councillor by the king for his merits. In 1872 he transformed the company into a joint-stock company to facilitate necessary investments. It did so with the help of the Quistorp & Co. Savings Bank. The share capital of the joint-stock company amounted to 275,000 thalers. In the resulting company Rathenower Optische Industrie-Anstalt formerly Emil Busch A.-G., Emil Busch thereafter held high positions as a “Delegate of the Supervisory Board” and as a director.
The company subsequently attained a dominant market position. Thanks to informal understandings with Zeiss, it limited free competition. Carl Zeiss had his son Roderich do an apprenticeship in business at Busch. Busch, in turn, contributed with an expert opinion to secure a subsidy of 35,000 thalers from the state to Zeiss’ Glass Technology Laboratory. Busch, who never studied, died in 1888. Because of him and because of Johann and Eduard Duncker, the town of Rathenow became a byword for high-quality optical devices.
The theater glass captivates with its very good preserved condition.
