Mauthe Mid-Century Bim-Bam Wall Clock – Wood, Brass & Cord – Germany – circa 1950s/60s

A particularly decorative Mid-Century wall clock from the renowned German clockmaker Mauthe, executed in a characteristic 1950s/60s design.

The round clock features a beautifully shaped dark wooden solid case with a striking radial wood grain. The light dial is equipped with elegant gold-coloured baton markers and slim gold hands. The piece is protected by a dome glass and finished with brass-coloured details.

A notable design detail is the original woven cord suspension. The cord runs around the clock and converges at the top with the matching round brass wall plaque. This gives the clock a pronounced Scandinavian Mid-Century look with a subtle maritime character.

On the back there is the original Bim-Bam sound element with two metal tone bars, mounted on the wooden backboard. The Bim-Bam principle was used in this period in high-quality German strike clocks for a characteristic two-note sound. Mauthe clocks with Bim-Bam striking from the 1960s are documented.

Important: the original Mauthe time/strike movement is no longer present. At some point, the clock was professionally/practically adapted with a Junghans Quartz – Made in Germany movement, running on one 1.5V AA battery. This makes time display simple and reliable for daily use. The original Bim-Bam sound element with the two tone bars is retained but is not driven by the current quartz movement.

The clock is in a beautiful vintage condition with normal age- and use-related signs that fit its age. The warm wood grain, the domed glass, the original dial, brass details and especially the unique cord suspension give this Mauthe a very decorative appearance.

A wonderful and striking piece of German Mid-Century design, suitable for both vintage clock collectors and for a stylish Mid-Century, Scandinavian or modern interior.
