Timeless elegance turned into engineering. Official document and representation of the Mercedes-Benz 280 SL, the most refined and powerful version of the famous W113 series, presented in the late 1960s as the culmination of a concept that united sportiness, safety and sophistication. Universally known as the 'Pagoda' for the distinctive concave shape of its hardtop, this model became a symbol of style and distinction.

The 280 SL Pagoda represents Mercedes-Benz's vision of a modern roadster: solid, balanced and technologically advanced for its time. Its design, by Paul Bracq, relied on clean lines, harmonious proportions and sober elegance that shunned excess. The iconic 'Pagoda' roof, besides its aesthetic value, met structural and safety criteria, reflecting the brand's obsession with technical innovation.

Under its long hood lay an inline six-cylinder of 2.8 liters with mechanical fuel injection, capable of developing around 170 hp. Paired with a four-speed manual gearbox —or optional automatic— and tuned for dynamic comfort, it offered a smooth, progressive and refined driving experience, without sacrificing more than respectable performance for its era.

The chassis, derived from the brand's sedans, and the inclusion of programmed deformation zones demonstrated a forward-looking approach to safety. The 280 SL was not a radical sports car, but a balanced grand tourer designed to cover long distances with elegance and poise.

Between 1968 and 1971, the 280 SL established itself as the most sought-after version of the W113 saga, especially in the American market. Today it is one of the most admired and valuable Mercedes-Benz classics: a piece that embodies 1960s German sophistication and a time when luxury and sportiness lived together naturally and with style.
