Description from the seller

Object: Antique board game / Solitaire (Jeu de Solitaire)

Period: Late 19th century (ca. 1870)
Origin: France (Paris)
Material: Wood (boxwood/pear) and ceramic (clay)
Condition: Good antique condition, with signs of aging (professionally stabilized shrinkage crack)

Special and rare antique wooden Solitaire board (Jeu de Solitaire) from the late 19th century (ca. 1863-1880).
Originating from the prestigious and historic Parisian toy shop "Aux Enfants Sages" in the famous Passage Jouffroy.

The original paper shop label is still beautifully preserved and legible on the underside, including an authentic handwritten inventory note from that era.

Board features:
Rare French model: This board features the sought-after 37-hole pattern (instead of the standard English 33-hole board). This makes the tactic even more challenging!

Material: Crafted from high-quality, solid turned wood (boxwood or pear wood) with a deep groove around the edge to hold the marbles.

Condition: The board is unique in that after about 150 years it remains perfectly flat and stable on the table (no warping).

Along the edge there is a characteristic, very old shrinkage crack in the grain, which was professionally stabilized in the French workshop at the time of manufacture. This is fully smoothened, stable, and does not interfere with the playing field in any way (see photo).

Includes the accompanying antique clay marbles:
The game is equipped with a beautiful, highly varied set of 39 original 19th-century clay marbles from the same period.
The game has a mood-friendly, harmonious color combination (ochre/orange, deep blue, and green) that beautifully contrasts with the light wood.
The set is fully complete with 36 playing marbles on the board and 3 handy spare marbles in the groove (one spare of each available color).
This ensures the game remains playable and complete at all times.
All marbles have the diameter matching the holes of this board.

A beautiful, museum-worthy historic display piece that is ready to play directly!
